Sunset Park, is a neighborhood in South Brooklyn that has long served lower and moderate income families. It has been a launching pad for millions of American Dreams, as immigrants from around the world have flocked to one of the last few neighborhoods where housing and living costs are still affordable.
Now the city wants to change all that. They want to create more upper-middle income housing, displacing affordable housing and making whatever affordable housing market there is that much more competitive. Make no qualms about this. Sunset Park either wins this fight against the city and developers, or it will find itself crushed under Bloomberg’s wave of gentrification.
Out of all the groups in and around Sunset Park, the Sunset Park Alliance of Neighbors seems to be the most diverse, grown up and organized. If you’re in Sunset Park today, and are interested in joining this noble cause, SPAN is having an orientation meeting today at 3pm. Details below.
