… after a two day survey of 3rd avenue and 5th avenue in Bay Ridge, our reporting team found over 25 vacated or vacating storefronts.
Perhaps the most unfortunate block of all is 3rd avenue, between Bay Ridge Avenue and 70th street. Here we found four empty store fronts. The remaining stores are niche food services, a used goods store, a deli and the famous fresh-bread Cangiano’s.

Did Bayridgistan jump the gun?
Since we published that piece Mr. Capano’s been hard at work. Although, at his most recent filing, he only brandished a modest $3,450 in campaign funds, as Mr. Capano pointed out in a recent email to Bayridgistan, “since all [Campaign Finance Board] participants (including Gentile) must agree to a spending cap we are both limited to spending the same amount (about $160,000) for race. So with matching funds (6-1) I’m sure my campaign will be on equal financial footing when it comes to spending on this [...]
The news around bayridgistan seems to be that Republican Robert Capano (who received a brutal 40% beatdown at the hands of Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny last year) will be trying his luck at the City Council Seat, challenging odds-on favorite Vincent Gentile.
According to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, Councilman Gentile has already reported nearly $160,000 in campaign contributions. Bob Capano has yet to report. [...]
